New Spreadsheet CELL

Excel Toolbar Notice the toolbar is similar to all Office Toolbars

Cell Data Step 1 - Cell data - Things that can be entered into a cell: –numbers –words –equations, formulas or functions –fill color –images (although they are actually on top of a cell, not in it)

Entering Data Step 2 - Entering data - Move to the cell where you want to enter data and enter words or numbers. If data is already in the cell it will be replaced without you having to cut or delete the previous data.

Entering Data Every cell has a name…what cell are we in now?

Moving from Cell to Cell How can we move from one cell to another? Gently move your cursor over the cell…what happens?

Excel Cursors Click and drag to highlight multiple cells with this cursor, or click in a cell to select the single cell Click and drag with this cursor to fill cell contents into cells below or to the right.

Formatting Data Step 3 - Format data - Once information has been entered into a cell, you might want to change something about the way the information is displayed. To do that, make sure the cell you want to format is selected and go to the Format menu. Select Cells.

Text in Excel When working with text, you can use the Formula Bar to make changes. Let’s try this…

Using Merge and Center What cell is my cursor in?

Using Merge and Center NOW what cell is my cursor in? What data have I written in the cell my cursor is in? NONE!

Using Merge and Center Select BOTH cells On the toolbar, click the merge and center button

Using Merge and Center Let’s try merging and centering cells..

Auto Fill Place the cursor on the bottom right of cell B1 and a black plus sign appears. Click and drag to the right to cell E1. Excel detects the pattern and fills in the other groups Let’s try it!...How about we use days, or months? What happens then?

Sorting Data Enter this data in these cells Organize your data alphabetically… how can we do this?

Sort Warning! Expand your selection so the data will stay “lined up”!

Sorting by Number From highest grade to lowest grade

Using Functions Insert a function in this cell… how do we do this? Enter data

Using Functions From the Insert menu select function A window will open prompting you to select a function
