Surface Water – fresh water in above ground lakes, rivers, and streams Watershed – entire area of land that is drained by a river Ex. Mississippi Water shed

Groundwater – water that seeps underground Aquifer – consist of rocks, sand, and gravel with lots of air space (pumice) that holds large volumes of water Recharge Zone – area of land from which the water originates

Water pollution – introduction of chemical, physical, or biological agents into water that degrades the quality Non-point pollution – pollution that comes from many sources Ex. Storm sewers, Point pollution – pollution that is discharged from a single source Ex. Factory, treatment plant, oil tanker
Pathogens – disease causing organisms like bacteria Organic matter – remains of plant and animal matter including feces Organic chemicals – pesticides, fertilizers, plastics, detergents, gas and oil Inorganic – acids, salts, metals Toxic chemicals – heavy metals, industrial chemicals, household chemicals Physical Agents – heat and suspended solids, soil Radioactive waste – nuclear power plants and defense facilities
