Water

“All is born of Water; all is sustained by water” What is meant by this statement? How does this stress the importance of our water resource, and how we maintain it?

Describe as best you can where the water in your home comes from Do you think the water you drink at home is pure or polluted? Explain your answer.

Explain the Water Cycle

Surface Water – fresh water in above ground lakes, rivers, and streams Watershed – entire area of land that is drained by a river Ex. Mississippi Water shed

Read pages 124 – 125

Provide flood control Provide electricity Irrigation, drinking, and Manufacturing process can occur because of the water produced by the resevoir

Groundwater – water that seeps underground Aquifer – consist of rocks, sand, and gravel with lots of air space (pumice) that holds large volumes of water Recharge Zone – area of land from which the water originates

Read the case study found on page and answer the questions

Desalinization – turning salt water into fresh water Saudi Arabia’s entire water supply is from desalinization of salt water

Towing water – transporting icebergs Read the chart on page 130 for an idea on how to conserve water

Water pollution – introduction of chemical, physical, or biological agents into water that degrades the quality Non-point pollution – pollution that comes from many sources Ex. Storm sewers, Point pollution – pollution that is discharged from a single source Ex. Factory, treatment plant, oil tanker

Pathogens – disease causing organisms like bacteria Organic matter – remains of plant and animal matter including feces Organic chemicals – pesticides, fertilizers, plastics, detergents, gas and oil Inorganic – acids, salts, metals Toxic chemicals – heavy metals, industrial chemicals, household chemicals Physical Agents – heat and suspended solids, soil Radioactive waste – nuclear power plants and defense facilities

We are going to walk and try and point out any nonpoint pollution sources or potential sources

Read pages and answer the questions

Biological magnification – each step the pollutant takes has greater impact on each species Ex. DDT

Artificial Eutrophication – humans causing a rapid spike in the phosphorous and nitrogen percentages Thermal pollution – excessive amounts of heat are added to a body of water Ex. Industrial cooling

Read the chart on page 138 about Water quality legislation in the US

Ground water pollution will likely plague us for centuries to come Figure 5-26

Is bottled water safe? Where does it come from?

Do the section review on page 139

The problem with ocean pollution is nobody feels responsible Who actually owns international waters? How can you make policies without the cooperation of the rest of the world?

BP oil Spill Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Do the section review on page 142

Complete the chapter review questions 1-16 on pages 144 and 145
