Pomelos

The pomelo is the largest of all citrus fruits. They can grow to be as large as a foot in diameter and weigh up to 25 pounds.

Pomelos When ripe the fruit is pale green to yellow. The rind is very thick, spongy and easy to peel. The rind is used to make marmalade, candied then dipped in chocolate or used in Chinese cooking.

Pomelos The membranes between segments are thick and bitter. They are usually discarded.

Pomelos The flesh is light yellow to coral pink. It tastes like a sweet, mild grapefruit, without the bitterness common to the grapefruit.

Pomelos The pomelo was most likely from Malaysia and Indonesia where it grew wild. It is also presumed to have been grown by the Chinese since B.C. However, today the U.S. is the world’s largest producer of pomelos.

Pomelo Today pomelos are still a popular treat in Asian cultures, especially during the Chinese New Year. They are a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. Some boil the skins and the leaves of the pomelo to prepare a ceremonial bath to "ritually cleanse a person and repel evil".

Pomelo The fruit is rich in vitamin C, beta- carotene, the B vitamins, potassium and fiber. It is generally eaten fresh or juiced. The flesh is also used in salads.
