President’s Fall Retreat Tuesday, August 13, 2013 Charting the Future of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities

On November 19, 2012, Chancellor Rosenstone asked 46 students, faculty, staff, presidents and trustees to participate in three (3) workshops.

Outcomes of Workgroups  Each workgroup provided guidance on three (3) broad questions: <The Education of the Future <The Workforce of the Future <The System of the Future

Outcomes of Workgroups  Advise MnSCU on the long-term strategic directions needed to: <Ensure access to extraordinary education for all Minnesotans; <Meet Minnesota’s workforce and community needs; <Deliver the most cost-effective, highest value education.

Focus of Workgroups  Function less like autonomous institutions.  Work together toward common objectives.  Focus on transformational change: <Competencies <Advancing Technologies  Leverage our shared resources.  Promote collaborative leadership at all levels.

Recommended Guiding Principles for Charting the Future  Transform Minnesota State Colleges and Universities by: <Forging deeper collaborations. <Fully leveraging our collective strengths & resources.

Six (6) Recommended Strategic Priorities 1.Better align our program offerings and services to state, workforce and learner needs by developing and implementing a statewide academic plan and a statewide master facilities plan. 2.Certify the competencies our graduates have mastered. 3.Increase access to our colleges and universities and accelerate the educational success of diverse students.

Six (6) Recommended Strategic Priorities 4.Create a comprehensive, statewide e-education strategy. 5.Deliver leading edge continuing education and customized training to students and employers through statewide collaboration. 6.Enable recommended strategic priorities to be realized by redesigning the system’s financial and governance model.

The Charting the Future report is very preliminary. Workgroups will make revisions by October 23, 2013.
