Chapter 20 Review Sahara & Sahel Quiz TOMORROW

Where do most people in the Sahara live? Mountain highlands Near a desert oasis Along the riverbanks In large cities

Which of the following statements about the Sahara is true? The region had a much wetter climate thousands of years ago. Over time, the desert is slowly expanding. Trade winds remove moisture from the ground, keeping the region dry. ALL of the above.

What does the old saying “Nighttime is the winter of the desert” mean? Temperatures at night drop below freezing. There are 3 months of bitter cold weather a year. The sun doesn’t rise for weeks in the winter. Plants stop blooming and go dormant at night.

How are oases formed? Springs bubble up to the surface from streams beneath the ground. In low spots, the land dips down to meet an underground stream. People create wells by using digging machines or digging by hand. ALL of the above.

How does the system known as shifting agriculture help marginal lands? It gives worn-out fields a chance to recover. It brings water to dry farmlands. It allows livestock to destroy the cover of plants. It creates new topsoil.

Along the southern edge of the major desert in Africa is a semiarid grassland called… The Great Plains The Sahara The Sahel The Southern Oasis

Pastoral nomads have adapted to life in the Sahel by… Building their communities near desert oases. Growing plants that need little rainfall. Wandering in search of food and water for their animals. Moving to cities in search of work.

How have desert plants adapted to unpredictable rainfall? They sprout quickly after rain and then set seed and die. They send roots deep into the ground to find water. They have small waxy leaves that lose little moisture. ALL of the above.

The most important and most common oasis plant is… Pine tree Coconut Date palm Baobab tree

What is one way humans have contributed to desertification? Too many people have chosen to cook with coal instead of firewood. Nomads increased the size of their herds. People planted too many trees in a desert. Farmers planted cash crops that ruined the soil faster.

The rivers that flow through the Sahara are Nile and Niger Ganges and Godavari Amazon and Orinoco Volga and Dnieper

How do the people protect themselves from the sun? They carry umbrellas to protect their faces. They cover their skin with a plant-based sunblock. They wear long, loose clothing and cover their heads and faces. They are nocturnal and never go outside during the day.

Why are most oasis settlements small? Laws restrict the growth of these communities. Their size is limited by their water supply. Families are not allowed to have more than one child. The majority of the people prefer to live in the desert.

As the world’s largest desert, the Sahara is about the same size as… United States Africa Rhode Island France

Ergs, regs, and hamadas are The native people of the Sahara. The major food sources for people living in the Sahara. The most common types of plant life in the Sahara. The main types of landforms in the Sahara.

How have the Tuareg adapted to life in the Sahara and Sahel? They settle along the coastline where seafood is plentiful. They raise animals and live a nomadic lifestyle. They grow a variety of crops at desert oases. They live in cities where jobs are easier to find.

Drought is to desertification as hunger is to Thirst Overeating Starvation Satisfaction
