Parts of the Cell

DNA Located in the Nucleus. Contains genetic information.
Cell Membrane Semi-permeable membrane (only allows certain things in and out) that surrounds the cell.
Nucleus Contains genetic information (DNA – chromosomes) Brain of the cell
Vacuole Storage unit for the cell. Animal cells have a few smaller vacuoles. In plant cells, there is one large Central Vacuole.
Centrioles Important for cell division in animal cells.
Golgi Bodies (Apparatus) Help to package proteins
Mitochondria Breaks down food to give the cell energy
Ribosomes Helps make proteins Found in the cytoplasm or attached to endoplasmic reticulum
Lysosome Animal cell - Contains enzymes used in digestion of food and waste If a lysosome were to burst it could destroy the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Systems of membranes throughout the cytoplasm Connects the nuclear membrane to the cell membrane Passageway for materials moving through the cell
ER Rough ER: makes membranes and makes proteins such as antibodies ~Has ribosomes attached Smooth ER: Makes proteins ~ Has no ribosomes attached
Cell Wall Plants only Provides structure and shape to the cell
Chloroplast Contains chlorophyll that makes food for the plant cell
