Healthy Women Statistics: A Resource for State Data on Women’s Health Kate Brett Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics
What is Healthy Women Statistics? A user-friendly set of tables composed of state-level data on the health and well-being of women and men. Developed by NCHS with support from the DHHS’ Office on Women’s Health.
Purpose To provide information on mortality, morbidity, and risk factors among specific population groups within a state, or states by specific sub-populations. To relate to Healthy People 2010 objectives.
Data All data concurrently available by: state, sex, race, Hispanic origin, and age.
Data Sources Current: Mortality Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Natality
Development Considerations All estimates are 3-year averages. Single year statistics produce many unreliable data points. Data are released as interactive data tables. User can format tables as desired.
Technical Issues Data suppression: based on relative standard error (RSE) = (SE/estimate) * 100% Mortality/Natality: suppression of estimates with less than 20 events (approximate RSE>23%). BRFSS: suppression of estimates with RSE>30%.
Beyond 20/20 ™ software Data dissemination software that allows interactive presentation of data. Retrieve data in multiple formats depending on need: Tables Maps Graphs (bar, line, pie)
How do you access the data? The software and information on how to use the software is available on the CD-ROMs, or from the Web site. Can either download files or access data online.
