Drama Documentary Take notes on the codes and conventions of this form? (5 mins) Use first word to tell you the form. i.e. Drama first then drama it is. Dramatised documentary. Usually used to present historical events or to represent people or things that do exist – to be typical of events actually happening in society. The point is to create an illusion of reality using location shooting, available lighting that signify that it is similar to actual reality Sometimes mixing fact and fiction.

Drama Documentary Further codes of this mode? Non actors or actors pretending to be real. Actors often not told what will happen next when filming the story in order to create a realistic ‘look’. Style is observational but fake. Fiction, but with a documentary ‘look’ or style.

Famous examples Peter Watkins is the most famous director here: ‘The War Game’ and ‘Culloden’ which he made in the 1960’s are excellent versions of this type of documentary. ‘Cathy Come Home’ directed by Ken Loach is another. This documentary film resulted in the setting up of Shelter for homeless people. The characters and situations were fictional but based on the circumstances of the time.
