PHOTOSYNTHESIS Living organisms need energy to survive.  All energy comes to the Earth in the form of the sun. Photosynthesis: The process of plants using the energy of sunlight to produce carbohydrates.  Purpose of photosynthesis is to store energy in glucose. How Photosynthesis Works Pg. 45 Target: I will be able to state the purpose of photosynthesis and identify the reactants, products, and organelles involved in photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis Equation: Light 6 CO H 2 O → C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Light Carbon Dioxide + water → carbohydrate + Oxygen (glucose)

Reactants: The beginning materials in a chemical equation.  Reactants of Photosynthesis: CO 2 (Carbon Dioxide) & H 2 O (Water) Product: The ending materials in a chemical equation.  Products of Photosynthesis: C 6 H 12 O 6 (glucose) & O 2 (Oxygen).

Requirements for Photosynthesis: light.  This is the energy that gets converted and stored in glucose.

Chloroplast: Where photosynthesis takes place in plants and algae.  Chloroplasts contain the green pigment chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight energy to start the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis Song Summary:

BREAKING DOWN PHOTOSYNTHESIS Pg. 44 Write the equation for photosynthesis, using different colors to represent the reactants, requirements, and products of photosynthesis. Draw the reactants of Photosynthesis in a creative way that will help you remember what they are. Draw the products of Photosynthesis in a creative way that will help you remember what they are. Draw the requirement for Photosynthesis in a creative way that will help you remember what it is.
