What do you already know about the book of Revelation? What are the things you want answered in this study?

Parking Lot Questions Who is the antichrist?

Revelation 1:1-20 V1 -Who is the focus of the book and is revealed (Jesus) -What is the purpose of writing this book (prophecy and proclamation) -Who gave the vision (meditating angel= messenger, not necessarily a visit by an angel) v2 -John was to carefully record the message

v3. -reveals the first of 7 beatitudes (blessed is he that readeth and hear words of this prophecy and keep these things). Others include blessed is he: Who die in the Lord (4:13) Who watch for His coming (16:15) Who are invited to the marriage supper (19:9) Who keep the words of the book (22:7) Who wash their robes (22:14)

V4. -Jehovah is described in similar terms to those of Moses in Exodus 3:14 and Deuteronomy 32:39 with the exception that the phrase “is to come” has been added.

 What is the significance of this addition = focus upon future events. Offered hope to a persecuted church Offered hope of a resurrection and eternal reward Offered hope of their kingdom and Israel’s being lifted up

-Seven signifies completeness and perfection. -Seven days of creation -Old Testament sacrifices were done in sevens -Seven is the root Hebrew word for swearing an oath -Seven major cities in Asia Minor

- Cities may have represented the significant postal cities or head churches that John was responsible for. Only official Roman business mail could be sent via government postal carriers.

-Message authored by the 7 spirits= Holy Spirit -Note the listing of the Trinity Jehovah Holy Spirit Jesus Christ, the ruler of earth

V5. What does it mean that Jesus is the firstborn from the dead? He is resurrection’s first fruit (1 Cor 15:3-4). A number of people had been raised from the dead but they had ultimately died. Jesus is the only one resurrected for eternity.

Why is it personally important that Jesus is the : Faithful witness Firstborn from the dead Ruler of the kings of earth Loves us and had freed us from our sins by His blood

 What has Jesus made us to be: -Kingdom and priests (Hebrew 10:19-22) to serve His God and Father

V1:7  What does coming with the clouds remind you of? - Acts 1:9-11 -every eye will see (how?). He is omnipresent -even those who pierced him (maybe the actual Roman soldiers, or it could be symbolic for those who rejected him- You and I were just as responsible as the Romans.

Rev 1:8 -The  and the  (alpha and omega). The first and the last -gives Himself this added name -says that He will come again -gives himself the title El Shaddai (God Almighty)

Rev 1:9-20 -John was enduring suffering as were many other Christians -Exiled to Patmos for preaching -Worshipping on a Sunday -Jesus spoke to him to write specifically to the 7 churches at Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea

v9. -Jesus promised tribulation (John 16:33) -Kingdom of God arrived with Jesus (Luke 17:21) -Kingdom’s consummation begins with Christ’s return (Rev 2:26-27) -Last days began at Christ’s first coming (Acts 2:14-21) and will be completed at His 2 nd coming.

V10. A voice like a trumpet is similar to that described by Daniel -Daniel 7:9-10 -Daniel 7: Daniel 10:4-6

v12-16 John saw: 7 golden lampstands= the 7 churches one like the Son of Man= Christ, who was dressed in white (purity) and gold (regal) one having the voice of authority 7 stars=pastors of the churches or ministering angels? Word of God was like a 2-edge sword (Isaiah 49:2)

V  What truths does Christ testify about himself? Don’t be afraid He was the First and Last The Living one (others were resurrected but then died) Was once dead but is now alive He will be alive forever He holds the keys to death and punishment (our judge and rewarder)

V19-20 This verse reveals a 3-fold division of time and the book itself: What you have already seen (1:12- 18) What is now (2:1-3:22), the letters to the church What is to come (Chapters 4  )

 Note that Christ gave John this as a “mystery”, however we need to understand that: Not a puzzle but a secret revealed Not something we need to solve Something where we do need to understand its meaning

Next Week Please read Revelation chapters 2-3
