Airport/Seaport Interoperability for Ground Transportation Operations Airport Ground Transportation Association Spring Conference March 29, 2011

What Do They Have in Common?

Airport/Seaport Common Challenges Vehicle congestion Customer service Regulatory Compliance- Operators and vehicles Revenue – payment for facility and roadway use Information- data to determine what is working and what is not Better Passenger flow from Ship to Airport to Aircraft

They Just Keep Getting Bigger

Leverage What Is Common Leverage a solution to benefit from common tasks and problems at your Airport and Seaport/Cruise terminal l Likely common ground transportation providers at both locations l Common Organization- County, Port Authority, City, etc. Moving Passengers and bags: l From Airport to Seaport l From Seaport to Airport

Develop Creative Techniques Opportunity for Common or shared GTMS l One system used by both organizations l Separate systems with sharing of common operator data l Develop an approach that is unique Efficiencies: l Cost l Administrative effort l Partnership focus resulting in greater success

Single System Example Register all Operators and Vehicles 1 time Complete data for activity at all facilities Single server infrastructure One tag on each vehicle All readers connected to single system Separate charging rules

Separate System Example Separate hardware, software, and server infrastructure Access by system users to the other system to import account and vehicle information Single vehicle tag required Separate business rules, charges, compliance process Retains the capability for greater integration I the future

Port of Miami Ground Transportation System Identifies, tracks and collects revenue for all commercial vehicles entering the port Leverages existing SunPass AVI equipment for interoperability Future migration to full interoperability with MIA GTS

Summary Both airports and seaports share common issues and concerns regarding commercial ground transportation Automated GTMS/Dispatch systems are in widespread use at airports and can be easily adapted for seaports Other common organizational and operational factors make this a potential “win-win” for all stakeholders Off the shelf solutions exist which can help in improving ground transportation operations and establishing a viable landside revenue stream The Port of Miami project, while being a first, clearly demonstrates the feasibility and value of integrating GT operations between airports and seaports
