Differentiation Strategies Depth & Complexity

Summary  Definition : Students can develop a deeper understanding of subjects/topics using specific icons from depth/complexity.  Pros : 1) Pick/choose icon you want to use. 2) It is a great way for visual learners because the icons help them remember. 3) Students can go beyond the surface level of a topic. 4) It helps ESL learners and learners with disabilities.  Cons : 1) Learning and remembering the icons in the beginning can be difficult for the teacher. 2) Not every icon can be used in every subject.

Suggestions for Implementation  Start with one icon and build on it. (Example: Details, patterns, rules, big idea, unanswered questions, etc.)  Songs to help students learn and remember the icons of depth and complexity.  Model how to use each icon.

Ideas for Uses Across the Disciplines  Patterns: With Science, you can look at the patterns and cycles of butterflies.  “Character Frame”: George Washington
