 IWBAT describe similarities and differences between the French and American school systems through a close read of an article, and completing a graphic organizer and writing a CELEL paragraph. 1.Why is this a worthwhile objective? 2.How does meeting this objective help to make you college-ready?  Let’s re-read the article in its entirety. As we read, add to, or adjust your annotations based upon our discussion. LISONS L’ARTICLE!

 In groups of 3-4, fully complete TASK 2 (the T- chart in your packet).  Be prepared to justify your findings (refer to a paragraph or quote in the article).  List similarities and differences based upon the 11 items on the list. These should correspond with the 11 “slots” on the T-chart. GROUPWORK

1.Budget: Federal budget for French education: $83 billion. For America: $69.4 billion. 1.Employment in Schools: In France, the Ministry of National Education is the nation’s largest employer. In America, teachers are employed by school districts/universities. EDUCATION IN FRANCE AND AMERICA

3.Educational divisions: In France, there are 4; maternelle, école élémentaire, collège, and lycée. In America, there are 3 or 4; preschool/kindergarten, elementary school, middle school/junior high, and high school. 3.Graduation rates: In France (2001), 80% of students graduated high school. In America, it was 70%. EDUCATION IN FRANCE AND AMERICA

5.Attendance requirements: In France, attendance is required until the age of 16. In America, attendance is required until graduation. Schools attendance in both countries is determined by residency. 6.Private school: Both countries have options for private schools ($$$/€€€). EDUCATION IN FRANCE AND AMERICA

7.Duration of each educational division: In France, collège lasts 4 years and lycée lasts 3. In America, middle school is 3 years, and high school is 4 years. 8.Numeration of grades: In France, collège begins at age 11, and is called sixième counting down to grade troisième (about 14 years old). Lycée begins at seconde, then premier, and ends in the last year called terminale. In America, grades are counted upwards: K-12. EDUCATION IN FRANCE AND AMERICA

9.Standardized tests: In France, students may take the baccalauréat (bac) after completing their schooling as a way to find out what they will do after their schooling. American students start taking standardized tests in elementary school and take them all the way through their schooling, and take more in order to get into college. 10.Course selection/electives: French students are more limited in their course selection choices. Most American schools provide students with choices for electives, as long as they are passing their core classes. EDUCATION IN FRANCE IN AMERICA

11.In France, students can begin to specialize their education during the last few years of high school. In America, pretty much everyone takes basically the same classes until the age of 18, then specialization takes place in college. EDUCATION IN FRANCE AND AMERICA
