Reading: Chapter 8 Lesson 2 pg 235 How do light waves differ from mechanical waves? Create your own version of the electromagnetic spectrum that demonstrates how the waves differ across the spectrum Define in your own words transmission, transparent, absorption, translucent, and opaque and reflection. Describe how reflection lets you see yourself in a mirror. Explain in your own words how we see different colors.

How do light waves differ from mechanical waves? Light waves can travel through empty space and some types of matter. Mechanical waves must travel through matter.

Create your own version of the electromagnetic spectrum that demonstrates how the waves differ across the spectrum

Define in your own words transmission, transparent, absorption, translucent, and opaque, and reflection. Transmission: how light travels through an object or space Transparent: almost 100% of the light is transmitted through the object/space Translucent: Some of the light is transmitted through the object/space Opaque: None of the light is transmitted through the object/space Absorption: Opaque objects take in some of the light that passes. Reflection: Objects that do not absorb some/all light send some of the light back into the atmosphere.

Describe how reflection lets you see yourself in a mirror. Mirrors are flat and will reflect nearly 100% of the light that is transmitted towards them in a parallel direction (i.e. no light is scattered).

Explain in your own words how we see different colors. An object appears a certain color because it absorbs some light waves, and reflects others. The reflected waves are what we see as the “color” of the object, when it could actually be considered as the one color that object is not actually…
