Magnet Related Activities in PH-DT The Magnet Control Project (MCP) was initiated in 1998 with the goal of producing an integrated system for controlling, protecting and analyzing data for the large magnets in the LHC experiments. Common hardware and software have been designed to facilitate the maintenance and operation. The B-field measurements service provides technical support for magnetic field measurements and calculations, and develops new sensors, readout applications and data analysis techniques for this activity. The group has a considerable level of technical expertise in constructing magnets, however due to retirements and transfer of staff it has lost the design and engineering capabilities.

Magnet Control Project (MCP) Today’s Mandate: Preventive and corrective maintenance of MCP systems, On- Call interventions, planning of maintenance tasks during shutdowns. Maintenance of the control software and implementation of PVSS modifications as requested by main users. Magnet Control System (MCS): PLC-based system under PVSS for controlling the magnet and other sub-systems. MCS provides the process controls needed to execute automatically the various running modes of the magnet system. It collects status information of various services, such as cryogenics, vacuum and power converters, and can decide on a Slow Discharge in case of detected problems. Magnet Safety System (MSS). It is a redundant system protecting the magnets against failure. MSS continuously measures safety parameters and machine status to control the machine state. In case of a developing problem, MSS will initiate the appropriate actions to bring a magnet into a safe state. Magnet Diagnostics System (MDS): VME-based fast acquisition system that receives signals from magnet sensors and MCS for on-line and post-mortem diagnostics. The system also comprises an annunciation part, a rapid data acquisition with a resolution of 1 msec, storing all logical events. Few auxiliary systems (vacuum control and vessel heater control systems, electrical low voltage distribution) also relate to the project. In addition, the MCP team contributes to support the DSS and RCS systems in the LHC experiments; DSS is a redundant PLC-based system for protecting the detector against various fault conditions, and RCS is a chassis system protecting individual racks against overheating and fire.

MCP Team Currently the MCP team is composed of a project leader and fractions of DT technical staff, who contribute to other DT projects – 80% Project leader – 50% Tech as CMS and LHCb expert, and responsible of MCP On-Call Service – 50% Tech as ALICE expert – 80% Tech as ATLAS expert – 50% Controls engineer The team runs an On-Call service 24/7, assisted by DSS and magnet experts from the LHC experiments. 4 FTE from the PH-02 Field Support Unit are dedicated in average to the project.

B-Field measurements This service provides magnetic field measurements and develops custom mechanical setups for the B-field measurements in experiments, as needed. Measurement campaigns have been carried out for the LHC experiment’s magnets, recently for T2K and AMS, and campaigns for MICE, Aegis, LHCb and NA62 are currently in the pipeline. The service maintains a considerable magnet park for precise calibrations, and measurements in magnetic fields as requested by external users. Responsible: F.Bergsma
