Welcome to Lord Elgin Kindergarten Orientation! Agenda 9:00 Registration forms in the library, then – Visit room 10 and 13 Receive name tags Students and parents rotate through centres/rooms Room 10 you can explore literacy centres and Room 13 you can explore math centres 10:00 – Parent presentation in Room 10, students stay in Room 13

What do we do all day in kindergarten? Reading –Alphabet/sounds –Phonemic awareness –Sight words –Simple sentences –Simple books to more complex Writing –Name –Words –Sentences –Stories Math –Number sense –Graphs –Calendar skills –Shapes (plane and solid) –Addition/Subtraction –Variety of other skills Science/Social Studies –Integrated throughout the day *This is a general list of the skills we will be learning this year.

Getting Ready For Kindergarten Cooperation/sharing Beginning to write name Able to state name Excited about school Manage own bathroom needs Recite or sing alphabet Start to recognize letters/sounds in alphabet Count to 10 and play number games Begin to write numbers

Arrival/Dismissal Our school day begins at 8:40, students should be here about 5-10 minutes before the bell rings. Supervision starts at 8:30 Students only inside fence Try to avoid being late Dismissal Procedures Pick up outside of the fenced yard. Pick up permission list (to complete in September) Remember to let your child’s teacher know if there is a change in dismissal by note or phone call.

What to Wear Shoes that can be put on independently. No laces please! Washable clothing as they may get marker/paint etc. on them. Please keep an extra pair of clothes (shirt, pants, socks, underwear) in a bag at all times in your child’s backpack in case of an accident.

Litterless Lunch/Snacks Pack all items in re-useable containers. Boomerang lunches means any garbage comes back home in the lunchbag. (No juice boxes) Label snack 1 and snack 2 and lunch. Healthy snacks. Visit the snack/lunch table for more info!

Notetote Daily form of communication. All students will receive a zippered bag at the beginning of the year. Please check it every day and send it back to school.
