English 8 English 8 Honors

What we will study this year in English 8:  All of the California Language Arts Standards.  The following reading selections: “Flowers for Algernon,” The Diary of Anne Frank (play), The Martian Chronicles,To Kill a Mockingbird, Chapters 1,4,6 and 8 of the red Holt text.  The following writing types: Research Report, Personal Narrative, Response to Literature, Persuasive Essay, Technical Documents.  Three self-selected novels to be read outside of class.

What we will study this year in English 8 Honors:  All of the California Language Arts Standards.  The following reading selections: “Flowers for Algernon,” The Diary of Anne Frank, The Martian Chronicles,To Kill a Mockingbird, Twelfth Night, The Call of the Wild, Chapters 1,4,6 and 8 of the red Holt text.  The following writing types: Research Report, Personal Narrative, Response to Literature, Persuasive Essay, Technical Documents.  Four self-selected novels to be read outside of class.

Class Rules: 1.Be courteous and respectful of each other and the teacher at all times. 2.Be in your seat when the bell rings. 3.Come to class prepared to learn with all necessary supplies. 4.No food, drinks, gum, toys or personal grooming in the classroom. 5.Always do your best. 6.Remain seated until dismissed by the teacher.

Discipline Policy: The above rules, as well as all Earl Warren Middle School Rules, are to be followed at all times so that learning in the classroom may be maximized. 1.Minor/ first time violations of rules will receive a verbal warning. 2.Second violation will result in parent contact and one hour detention to be served after school in the detention room. 3.Repeated and/or major violations will result in referral to Assistant Principal.

Class Procedures: 1.The agenda will be listed in the classroom on the white board daily. 2.The monthly calendar will be also be maintained on my web page at: 3.All work will be turned in to the black trays against the back wall by class period. It is your responsibility to get homework turned in; I will not collect it from you. 4.Please consult the class calendar to get assignments in the event you are absent and/or consult a “study buddy” in the class to see what you missed. 5.Late work turned in due to excused absence will be accepted for full credit, one day late for each day absent. All other late assignments will be reduced one letter grade for each class day late from the due date and will not be accepted after 5 school days. 6.All late work turned in, whether excused or unexcused, must have stapled to the front a "Late Assignment" slip, available in front of the turn in trays. Otherwise the assignment will receive only half credit. 7.Rest room passes will be issued only in the case of an extreme emergency, and will not exceed 1 per quarter (4 per year). Unused passes will be added as extra credit points each quarter. 9. Grades will be kept on computer and posted in the classroom by student number every 1-2 weeks. You may access up-to-the-minute grades through the Aeries portal on the internet.

Some Facts About Mrs. Shope  This is my 10 th year teaching at Earl Warren. Prior to middle school I taught high school.  Before becoming a teacher I worked as a… lawyer.  Although I’ve lived in the San Diego area for 19 years, I am from another state… Kansas  My husband and I live in La Jolla.
