Summary or Analysis? Use ads to practice your ability to understand the difference between summary and analysis.

Warm Up Date: 9/30 – 10/4 0 Prompt: 1. Use one adjective to describe your weekend. 2. Analyze the moments of your weekend that inspired you to use that word.

What’s the difference between summarizing and analyzing? 0 Share your answer with a partner. 0 Come to a consensus with a partner.

Summarize 0 The ad includes: 0 A bottle of Heinz ketchup that looks like it’s made up of tomato slices. 0 A red background-the color of ketchup. 0 A sentence written on the bottom: “No one grows ketchup like Heinz.” 0 Main message: Heinz ketchup includes fresh ingredients.

Analyze 0 The ad campaign gives the reader the message that this ketchup is fresh by: 0 Including very red, thick, fresh- looking slices of tomato. 0 Including the green portion of the tomato at the top makes the item look fresh-picked. 0 By stacking the slices into the shape of a bottle, the ad campaign makes the reader think of the familiar brand and a fresh product. 0 By using the term “grows” in the ad, the ad campaign makes the reader think of a tomato harvest instead of a processing plant.

Summarize this photo “read” the photo Describe it in your own words Explain any point you think that the photographer intends to make.

Analyze the Photo How well does the photographer get his message across? How does the author appeal to the reader? What different elements of the photo contribute to the argument the photographer is trying to make?

Summarize this ad: Write summary in three sentences or less. Author: use “the photographer” Source: Nike marketing group

Analyze this ad: Write analysis in three sentences or less.

Warm Up: Tuesday Is this true: sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me. Why or why not?
