Lesson 3.2 Day 2 Solving Systems by Elimination

 Students will be able to use systems of equations to solve application problems.

Systems of Equations can be used to solve many application problems. A candy manufacturer wishes to mix two candies as a sales promotion. One candy sells for $2 per pound and the other sells for $.75 per pound. The manufacturer wishes to have 1000 pounds of the mixture and to sell the mixture for $1.35 per pound. How many pounds of each type of candy should be used in the mixture?

 The Smith and Jones families went out to dinner. The Smith family had 6 hamburgers and 4 drinks, and the Klein family had 12 hamburgers and 6 drinks. The Smith family spent $18.50 and the Jones family spent $ How much does a drink cost? Write and Solve a system of equations.

 A laboratory technician is mixing a 10% saline solution with a 4% saline solution. How much of each solution is needed to make 500 milliliters of a 6% saline solution? Write and solve a system of equations.

If a 7% saline solution and a 4% saline solution are mixed to make 1200 milliliters of a 5% saline solution, how much of each solution is needed?
