Why?

What’s Going On In Class Today?  Learning Target:  We will analyzed the political and economic effects of Westward Expansion on American Indians  Success Criteria:  I will list challenges faced by Quanah Parker and the Buffalo Soldiers during Westward Expansion

Recap Search for Peace – 1867  President Grant set of Indian agents known as Quakers who would be friendly in dealing with the Natives.  Agents from the U.S. government met with Natives in Kansas and signed a peace treaty called the Treaty of Medicine Lodge Creek. According to this, the Natives agreed to go to the reservations in Oklahoma. (Indian Territory)

Peace Policy Fails  Many Kiowa and Comanche refused to go to the reservations. They claimed they were cheated and treated badly by agents.

Small Group Talk  Think (30 Seconds): Think of a time when you were homesick or lonesome for friends and family, maybe summer camp or a first sleep-over when you were younger.  Write (1 Minute): Write down what those feelings were like or how you dealt with being lonesome.  Pair:  Partner A share with Partner B (30 Seconds)  Partner B share with Partner A (30 Seconds)  Share: Be prepared to share aloud.

Peace Policy Fails  Quanah Parker was the last chief of the Comanches.  He was the son of Peta Nocona and Cynthia Ann Parker, a white girl taken captive during the raid of 1863 on Fort Parker, Texas.  His was the last tribe to come into the reservation system.  He fought against the U.S. Government and by raiding Texas towns  After being forced onto the Reservation he adopted the “white ways” by learning English and the Western Culture  Some of the Comanches claimed he “sold out to the white man” after he adopted the American way of life

Quanah Parker Article  Read the Quanah Parker article and answer the following question in your notebook in 4-5 sentences  How might the events of losing his parents at an early age change his life and the actions he might take to protect the Comanche people?  Why did the American government attempt to Americanize the Indian tribes?

Buffalo Soldier  Working with your group look at the packet on your table and answer the Buffalo Soldier questionnaire
