Effects of the Age of Exploration in Europe: New form of government: Absolutism New economic system, mercantilism New way of thinking: Scientific Revolution

Scientific Revolution – A new way of thinking about the natural world that challenged traditional views and instead relied upon experimentation.

Old View of Science Scholars relied on traditional authorities for beliefs about how the world works Traditional Authorities Roman Catholic Church Ancient Scholars One example Aristotle, a Greek scientist, believed the sun, moon, stars, and planets revolved around the Earth. This is a geocentric theory.

What causes people to challenge the traditional views of science? Exploration of the world Discovery of new lands, people, and animals

Traditional sources could not explain the new discoveries, lands, and people that came from the Age of Exploration Why didn’t Christopher Columbus fall off the edge of the world when he sailed West? How could there be two whole continents between Europe and Asia?

To explain these new discoveries, Francis Bacon and Gene Descartes developed a new Scientific Method 1.Identify problem 2.Form hypothesis (Make a guess why) 3.Test hypothesis (experiment) 4.Record results 5.Form conclusions based on results.

Scientific Revolution inspires some of our greatest scientists: Galileo Copernicus Isaac Newton Antony Leeuwenhoek Johannes Kepler Robert Boyle
