CRITICAL THINKING WELCOME! WE WILL BEGIN OUR DISCUSSION IN JUST A FEW MINUTES! Unit 7 Seminar

What is critical thinking?

Barriers to Critical Thought Sometimes we think in ways that prevent us from thinking critically. Here are 6 barriers to clear thinking:

Appeal to Authority We believe and trust someone who is not really an expert. Example: TV commercial doctor says we should buy a certain pain reliever med.

Appeal to Emotion Someone manipulates our emotions. Example: James will be really hurt if you don’t go to the play.

Appeal to Fear Fear is created without evidence. Example: If you don’t get the most expensive car seat available, you are a bad parent.

Appeal to Flattery Flattery is presented instead of evidence. Example: I really like your teaching style Professor Smith. You’re the best instructor I’ve ever had. I didn’t bring in the doctor’s note saying that I had the bubonic plague, but you know I would never lie to you.

Appeal to Novelty If it’s new, it must be better. Example: New and improved packaging and the product stays the same.

Appeal to Pity The appeal for sympathy is used instead of evidence. Example: If I don’t get an “A” in this class, I won’t qualify for the scholarship and I might have to drop out of school.

Review of All Six Barriers Appeal to Authority Appeal to Emotion Appeal to Fear Appeal to Flattery Appeal to Novelty Appeal to Pity Which are you most vulnerable to?

How does critical thinking and being aware of these barriers help you in the early childhood development field?

How can critical thinking change the way you view others and the world?

Professional Development and KU Resources Professional development is a contributor to high quality early childhood interactions. Your readings this week will allow you to look at your own state and the requirements for minimum pre-service qualifications for childcare personnel. 17

Unit 8 What is Professional Development and why is it important?

Unit 7 Project This term we have learned about the roles, responsibilities, and various career opportunities within the field, and as we explored each career opportunity, we discussed standards, strategies, and professional standards. For your Unit 7 Project, you will write a 1-2 page essay sharing how the role of the early childhood professional is different from what it was in the past.

Unit 7 Project

Using the template provided, you will include the following:  Identify how professionalism, personal characteristics, responsibilities, expectations, and roles have changed.  Explain some of the new roles the early childhood professional should anticipate.  Share how historical events, theorists, or legislation have influenced these changes. Save your project and submit it to the Unit 7: Project Dropbox. 22

Complete the readings. Complete the learning activities. Participate in discussion. Attend seminar or complete seminar option 2. Complete and submit the project. Complete the graded review. Weekly Reminders
