Local Authorities – Environmental Health Health Needs Intermediate Modern Studies

Local Authorities have a role to play in meeting the health needs of the population. Glasgow City Council is our local authority. We have already studied free school meals and examples of health promotion activities in schools. Today we will study environmental health.

Councils, through environmental health departments, try to protect public health in many ways. We will look some examples. Glasgow City Council will be used as a case study.

1.Household waste – collected weekly. Helps to overcome problem of rats, mice etc. Responsible for disposing waste. 2. Street cleansing also carried out.

3. Swimming pool sampling – Environmental protection services undertake quarterly sampling of swimming pool water. If standards not met, pools can be shut down.

4. Clean Glasgow Campaign – Aim is to clean up Glasgow. Includes educational programmes in schools – eg. Eco Schools programme.

5. Infectious disease – For example, try to control food poisoning. Visit affected place and make recommendations – can close if necessary.

Pest Control Environmental health will deal with disease spreading animals and insects. They will eliminate/remove Rats Mice Wasps, etc
