Rise of Dictators

Italy and Russia Open your books and read pages Italy: What is fascism? Who is Benito Mussolini and how does he rise to power in Italy Russia: Why is Vladimir Lenin important to Russian politics? What happens once Lenin dies How does Russia change, and what are collectives?

Italy Benito Mussolini founds the fascist party Fascism: An aggressive nationalistic movement that considered the nation more important the than the individual. Mussolini uses the fear of communism to rise to power, he promised employment and protection of the middle class. As he rises in power the king of Rome is convinced to make Mussolini Premier.

On your own or with the person sitting next to you answer the following questions about the picture (Text reads Defend him) Who is Italy asking its people to defend? What kind of influences is Italy trying to keep out of it’s country?

Russia Vladimir Lenin: Establishes the communist party, and makes Russia the Union of Soviet Republicans.(USSR) The Communist party was a one party system that was known to suppress individual liberties and punish opponents. Once Lenin died there was a power struggle over who should control the party.

The Future of the USSR Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin would compete for power in Russia after Lenin’s death. Stalin would take power instituting five year plans to try and industrialize Russia. Collectives: Family farms that were combined and were owned by the government.

On your own or with the person sitting next to you answer the following questions about the picture The text states (Liberated woman, build up socialism) What is the goal of this poster if you live in communist Russia Do you think women had much of a choice in their work ? Why or why not?

On your own or with the person sitting next to you answer the following questions about the picture Text states (The Capitan of Soviet Country leads us from victory to victory !) With the picture and the text what do you think this picture is trying to accomplish for Stalin? Do you think this picture is likely to be truthful? Why or Why not?

Germany On your own read pages 684 to 685 What does the growing Nazi party in Germany stand for? What points did Hitler make in his book “Mien Kampf”

Hitler’s Germany Hitler was known for being anticommunist, as well an admirer of Mussolini Hitler will use the failing German economy to rise to power. Leads to the formation of the NAZI party, who believed in an anti communist agenda and believed that Germany should expand its territory

Mein Kampf In 1923 the Nazi’s tried to seize power the plan failed and Hitler was arrested. While in Prison Hitler wrote the book Mien Kampf meaning my struggle In the book he stated that Germans with blond hair and blue eyes belonged to a master race. He believed Germany needed space and believed expanding into Poland After Prison Hitler would rise to power.

On your own or with the person sitting next to you answer the following questions about the picture The text states (The Eternal Jew) What sort of stereotypes is the NAZI party trying to form around the Jewish people? Why would they do this? Can you think of any other time some one tried this?

On your own or with the person sitting next to you answer the following questions about the picture The text states (Jews- make wars longer, and start wars) What is Germany blaming the Jewish people for? If you were a Jew living in Germany, and you saw people supporting these ideas how would you feel Why do you think the German people supported this

Japan Read page 685 How was Japan affected by the ailing economy of the world? What does the Japanese military believe will lead to the success of Japan? What happens in Manchuria?

Japan and Manchuria Japan was not making enough money off its exports to cover its imports. As other countries began to suffer they increased fur thing Japan’s economic downfall. Japan’s military blamed corrupt politicians for their downfall. The military believed the best way to improve Japan’s economy was to invade Manchuria

The Neutrality act Under the Neutrality act made it illegal to sell arms to any country at war. It was the hope that this action would keep the United States out of any foreign war.

The Spanish Civil War Begins in 1936 when post election rebellion occurs, which is backed by Spanish Fascist party. The revolt would become a civil war and attract world wide attention Many Americans wanted to become involved in the war and defend against fascism. The U.S. government continued to support not selling arms to warring territories.

Formation of the Axis powers After the Spanish Civil War Germany and Italy decided to cooperate on international issues The pact required that the countries exchange information about communist groups Japan would eventually join them.

Internationalism While this is occurring FDR is beginning to take office. He considers ending the depression to be his first priority He does believe action is needed on some foreign problems Internationalism: The idea that trade between nations helps prevent war. FDR believed that the U.S. should try and keep the peace.

Warm-up2/6/2012 What is the U.S.’s approach to the war in Europe? What sort laws are passed to support this belief?

The rise of the Axis Read pages As Hitler and the Nazi party rise in power what are some of the problems they create? Could they be stopped. What does the term Anschluss mean? Why was the Munich Conference assembled. Who is involved what is the result. What does appeasement mean?

Appeasement Appeasement: making concessions in exchange for peace. Anschluss: Hitler’s to unify Austria and Germany Hitler would allow Austria to vote and try and let members of the Nazi party be elected. When it was clear that this would not be the course Hitler decided to send troops into Austria.

Crisis in Munich Germany lays claim to the Sudetenland Sudetenland: An area of Czechoslovakia with a large German speaking population Hitler lays claim to this area and is threatened by both France and Russia that if he takes action they would strike back. Munich Conference: Held between France Britain Italy and Germany to decide the state of Checoslavakia

Hitler on the move Read Pages 690 and 693 What events occurs because of Poland? What deal does Hitler make with Russia? What does the word Blitzkrieg mean and what is it referring to? What is the battle of Britain and why was it important?

Hitler and Poland Hitler announces that he wants control of Danzig, which is a primarily German city. Problem: Danzig is part of Poland Britain and France decide they can no longer let Germany have all of its demands. France and Britain back Poland Hitler begins making deals with Russia

Nazi Soviet Pact Hitler turns to Russia to make a peace deal hoping he will not have to fight them along with Britain and France. The two countries sign a non aggression agreement, and secretly decide to split Poland When Germany takes Poland they will not honor the agreement.

The loss of Poland France By 1939 Germany had begun its invasion of Poland. Poland could not resist for long due to its out dated technology and tactics. The Germans would use a new tactic Blitzkrieg: “Lightening war” The technique used takes planes and paratroops to break lines and stop supplies Germany would use this same idea after out maneuvering France.

Britain stands firm Winston Churchill hoped that the Battle Britain will unite the British people and bring the isolationist Americans into action. Germany would attack the British Isle from June 1940-the fall of 1940 The two countries would begin to bomb each others capitals.

Churchill and the Battle Of Britain Who does Churchill say Britain will stand by in battle? Where will Britain face the enemy? What are Britain and France holding out for? Why is the Battle of Britain so Critical?

“I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty’s Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.”

Warm-up 2/8/2012 What does the term appeasement mean? Why is it important to our study of World War II?

Reading Pages What sort of laws are being passed by the Nazi party in occupied countries? What rights do they restrict? What events lead Kristallnacht? What does the word mean and what actions were taken? How does the U.S. handle Jewish Refugees, Especially those of the St. Louis?

Persecution of the Jews Anti -Semitism was not new to Europe it had just never been brought to the extreme that Hitler made it. Especially when the NAZI party takes power in Nuremberg Laws: Laws that took citizenship from German Jews Originally started with marriage Eventually identified a Jew as anyone with a Jewish Grand Parent, which would stop them from voting or holding public office.

Kristallnacht In November of 1938 a Jewish Refugee Herschel Grynzspan killed a German diplomat. When Hitler hears of this he is enraged Hitler ordered Joseph Goebbels to stage attacks on Jews, but make them look spontaneous.

Video Did Germany have more anti Semites than any other country? What kind of changes do people see going on in their country? What do the Jewish people do to try and deal with the problems they face? What are some of the crimes that were described by the victims of Kristallnacht? Was Hitler’s plan a success?

The Final Solution How does the United States handle the Jewish Refugees coming from Germany? Especially those of St. Louis? Why is the Wannsee Conference held? How did the idea of the concentration and extermination camp evolve?

After the German acquisition of Austria nearly 3,000 Jews a day tried to get visa to the U.S. Most were unsuccessful leaving them in Nazi occupied territory. German officials also began passing laws for baying giving visa’s to public charges

S.S. St. Louis The SS. St. Louis would attempt to make port in Havana with the understanding that the Cuban Government would let them enter. Cuba revokes the certificates, which leaves the ship full of Jewish refugees to sail between Cuba and Florida. Being revoked by both areas the St. Louis is forced to return to Europe where the Jews will be left in occupied countries

Night and Fog How far are some of these concentration camps from German society? What are some of the descriptions of the camp as its being constructed? What is the journey like for some Jews to the camp? What were the conditions like in the camp? Who claims responsibility for the actions taken against Jews at the camp?
