THE SOLAR SYSTEM By: Sarafina Subahan

Basic Facts There are eight planets in the Solar System. There are four Inner Planets in the Solar System Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. There are 4 outer planets in the Solar System Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. The most common word for Inner Planets are Terrestrial Planets. The most common word for Outer Planets are Gas Giants.

The Sun The Sun is a huge star in the center of the Solar System. The temperature of the Sun’s surface is 5,778 K. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 149,600,000 km. The Sun helps to keep Earth alive because it warms the surface so that animals and plants can grow, provides us with light and many other things. The Sun is the biggest and most important thing in the Solar System.

Mercury Mercury is the first planet from the Sun. Mercury is the smallest planet. Mercury takes 88 days to orbit around the sun. Craters on Mercury’s surface are deep. Mercury is a Terrestrial Planet. Mercury’s surface is also like Earth’s Moon

Venus Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It take’s Venus 224 days for Venus to orbit around the Sun. Venus was named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Venus’s nickname is Earth’s sister. Venus’s surface is dry.

Earth Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Earth is the fifth largest planet in the Solar System. Earth is the largest Terrestrial planet. A nickname for Earth is the Blue Planet. Earth was formed about 4.54 billion years ago. Life appeared on earth within Earth’s first billion years. Earth is our home.

Mars Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System. Mars was named after the Roman god of war. Some people call Mars the Red Planet because it looks red. Mars has two Moons Phobos and Deimos. Mars has a thin atmosphere.

Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System. The Romans named this planet by the Roman god Jupiter. Jupiter itself weighs more than all the other planets in the Solar System combined. Jupiter is a Gas Giant.

Saturn Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun. Saturn is the second largest planet in the Solar System. Saturn is named after the Roman god of agriculture. Saturn is mostly admired by it’s amazing and beautiful rings. Saturn’s rings are made out of dust, ice, and rocky materials.

Uranus Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. The wind speed on uranus is fast, it can reach 250 meters per second. Uranus was discovered by William Herschel. Uranus was discovered on March 13, 1781. Uranus is also a Gas giant. Uranus is very cold.

Neptune Neptune is the eigth planet from the Sun. Neptune was named after the Roman god of the sea. Neptune was discovered by Urbain Le Verrier, John Couch Adams, and Johann Galle. Neptune was discovered on September 23, 1846. Neptune is deadly cold.
