Elements of Plot Structure

Plot (Definition)  Organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story.  Series of incidents that related to one another.  Organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story.  Series of incidents that related to one another.

1. Exposition  Occurs at the beginning of a story.  Introduction to setting, main characters, conflict (main problem).

2. Rising Action  Development of conflict; problem intensifies.  Building of tension and suspense.  Development of conflict; problem intensifies.  Building of tension and suspense.

3. Climax  Turning point in the story.  Highest point of tension.  Usually, main character comes face-to-face with conflict; main character usually undergoes a change.

4. Falling Action  Loose ends tied up.  Fall out of the big climax/fight and tension.  Loose ends tied up.  Fall out of the big climax/fight and tension.

5. Resolution  Conflict is resolved in some way.  Story comes to an end.
