Pg 12 of IAN

Objective: To use a stereomicroscope to magnify different structures on a flower.

Research: Compound microscope: Uses two magnifying lenses: 1.An objective lens located near the specimen being viewed 2. An eyepiece lens located near the eye of the viewer.

Lenses: bend light Other optical instruments that use lenses: cameras binoculars telescopes

A microscope is similar to a refracting telescope. A microscope uses 2 convex lenses to magnify extremely small objects. One lens of themicroscope, objective is placed at the end of the body tube close to the the object being viewed. The other lens, the eyepiece, is used tomagnify the image formed by the objective.

Magnification: Found by multiplying the power of the eyepiece lens times the power of the objective lens.

FINDING THE POWERS OF MAGNIFICATION: Step 1: Look at the eyepiece. Record the number you see. Eyepiece # =10X Step 2: Look at the microscope objectives. Record the number for each. (Turn the nosepiece to see each of them) First objective number=1XSecond Objective number= 3X Step 3: To find the powers of magnification of your microscope, take the number on the eyepiece and multiply it by the number on each of the objectives. ____________ X ____________ = ______________ Eyepiece # First Objective # Power of Magnification ____________ X ____________ = ______________ Eyepiece # Second Objective # Power of Magnification 10X1X10X 3X 30X

OBSERVING A FLOWER UNDER THE STEREOMICROSCOPE 1.Place the flower in the petri dish. Click the 1X objective into place. Put the petri dish on the stage of the microscope. 2.Write down your observations. 3.Draw pictures of your flower, both a top view and a side view. DRAW PICTURES THE SIZE YOU SEE IT through the microscope!
