Personal Safety  The key to personal safety is to be able to recognize potentially dangerous situations and learn strategies to avoid them.

Protective Factors  Protective factors are traits and conditions that help shield you from harm 1. Individual 2. Family 3. Peer/School 4. Community

Strategies for Staying Safe  Avoid unsafe areas  Carefully carry your wallet or purse  Walk briskly and confidently  Avoid walking alone at night  Park your car in a well-lit area  Let family know where you are going  Don’t get in elevators alone with strangers  Get on/off buses where well-lit  If someone gives you a ride, have them wait until you are safe  Don’t hitchhike or give rides  Avoid alcohol and drugs

Self Defense  Self Defense includes any strategy for protecting oneself from harm  Being assertive means standing up for your rights and beliefs in firm but positive ways

Contribute to a Safe School  Don’t carry weapons and report those who do  Report violent acts or threats  Practice conflict-resolution  Use refusal skills to resist negative peer pressure  Choose friends carefully  Avoid violent people  Tell an adult if you fear for your safety
