SEMINAR AGENDA  Ethics  Professionalism  The NAEYC Code of Ethics  Ethical Dilemmas  Reflection 8

Unit 8 Seminar What are Ethics? 9 “Integrity is doing the right thing, even if nobody is watching.” ~ author unknown

What is Ethics? Every field has a code of ethics that governs how its professionals will behave in a range of situations. In Unit 8, we will explore the ethical code(s) that govern professionals in the field early childhood development. It is critical that you start you career in the field with this knowledge in hand! 10

Ethics  Ethics. The study of right and wrong, or duty and obligation, that involves critical reflection on morality and the ability to make choices between values and the examination of the moral dimensions of relationships. Ethics and the early childhood educator: Using the NAEYC code. Washington, DC: NAEYC.

What are Ethics? Ethics  Determine Right and Wrong  The Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  *Norms of conduct that distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior 12

Why should we explore the code of ethics?

14 After completing this unit, you should be able to: Identify which ethical codes govern professionals who work in the field of early childhood development Explain the main reasons why ethical codes are important Course outcomes practiced in this unit: Identify early childhood professional roles, responsibilities, and standards

Ethics in Early Childhood Education Professional Conduct in Early Childhood  NAEYC Code of Ethics Preamble: NAEYC recognizes that those who work with young children face many daily decisions that have moral and ethical implications. The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct offers guidelines for responsible behavior and sets forth a common basis for resolving the principal ethical dilemmas encountered in early childhood care and education. The primary focus of the Code is on daily practice with children and their families in programs for children from birth through 8 years of age, such as infant/toddler programs, preschool and prekindergarten programs, child care centers, hospital and child life settings, family childcare homes, kindergartens, and primary classrooms. 15

16 NAEYC Core Values Appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage of the human life cycle Base our work on knowledge of how children develop and learn Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family Recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture,* community, and society Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleague) Respect diversity in children, families, and colleagues Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect

17 Ethical Dilemma # 1 You teach in a school that has a population from a culture in which physical punishment is common. This morning a girl from this cultural group strikes another child. A new aide who shares the child's culture grabs him and twists his ear. The child is momentarily stunned but soon is fine and seems calm the rest of the day. Apart from some redness, there are no other effects. When you speak with the aide, she tells you children in her community are used to this discipline. She says, "It calmed him down, didn't it?" The issue: Do you tell the aide that physical punishment is not acceptable in your class OR do you let it go? NAEYC Code of Ethics Made up of Core Values, Ideals and Principles View the code //How does P-1.1 on page 3 relate to this scenario?

Making Decisions

NAEYC How to use the Ethical Codes:

Ethical Dilemma # 2 One of your parents is complaining about nap time. She does not want her son to take a nap because she is having difficulty getting him to bed at night. You know that three year olds need to rest in the middle of the day and naps are the policy of your center. How do you react? 20

Creating a Professional Portfolio The final course in your Child Development Degree program will be IS299 Capstone Course. This course will be your opportunity to reflect upon your learning and it culminates with the development of an electronic portfolio where you will showcase samples of your learning throughout this program. Therefore, you will want to carefully consider which assignments in the courses that you take may be a good example of your learning to include in your portfolio and be sure to save them in a secure place so you will be able to access them when you take the Capstone course. Save your work!!!!!

Possible Portfolio Contents  Philosophy statement  Autobiography  Goals statement  Photos  Activities from your own classes  Brochure, workshop outline  Research paper  Resume  References  Work samples  Lessons with reflections  Project webs, charts  Stories  Family resources  Child study/observations
