Presentation transcript:

 Internet –INTERnational NETwork is the network of computer networks.  It is a Wide Area Network(WLAN).You can have unlimited access to internet.  The most used feature of Internet is World Wide Web (WWW)  WWW stores millions of web pages on web servers. These pages can contain Text, pictures, movies, animation and sound.  Web pages are written in a language or code called HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language). A set of web pages is called a web site

 Each web page has its own Unique address or URL(Uniform Resource Locator)  Web pages are connected by Hypertext links. When a link is clicked you will be taken to another page which could be on another server in any part of the worlk

To connect to the internet you need:  A Computer  A Telephone line  A modem-the type of modem you use depends on the type of connection you have. ◦ Eg. Dial-up, ISDN, DSL, Cable modem  An account with an ISP(Internet Service Provider)  Browser software

 ISP ◦ ISPs are the companies who provide you with access to Internet  Browser ◦ A browser is a program that allows you to view the pages written using HTML on the web using hyperlinks ◦ The most widely used browser is Internet Explorer  Search Engine ◦ A search engine is a service which helps you find the information you want on the internet ◦ Commonly used search engines are Google, Yahoo

 It can be accessed from anywhere.  Greater amount of information is available.  It can be used to send and receive instant electronic messages ( )  Information is easy to find using Search Engines.  It can be accessed from any computer linked to the internet  Sounds, pictures, video clips may be available  It can be used to sell goods to a world-wide market

 Too much information available. Search Engines return thousands of links. So it may be difficult to find exactly what is wanted.  Data may not be secure if transferred over internet  Many viruses are spread using internet

 Intranet- INTernal Restricted Access NETwork  It is usually a Local Area Network(LAN).  An intranet is a website located on a private network within an organization. It has password controlled pages and it is only for the use of members of that organization.  Browsers are used to display web pages which have hyperlinks to other pages.  E.g. A school may have an intranet which pupils can access for information from any networked computer. No body outside the school can look at the intranet

 Advantages: ◦ Easy communication between the users. ◦ Intranet is better protected for use of /from viruses/from hackers. ◦ No wastage of time looking through millions of resources. ◦ An intranet is free because it does not involve phone links ◦ Information can be easily updated and shared inside a company or school.  Disadvantages: ◦ Information cannot be shared outside the local network
