Reading At Home Yeronga SHS

The Power of Reading 1. One of the most powerful ways to improve academic achievement in schools 2. Success in reading is key to success at school and in everyday life 3. Remember reading is about acquiring information for enjoyment and understanding. It isn’t a test!

My child can read! Even though a child is able to read and they might be a fluent reader it doesn’t necessarily mean they understand what they are reading. Two Basic Skills Phonics & Word Recognition Comprehension

Reading TIPS at Home – How you can help! Make reading visible and accessible Share books on a daily basis Boys need to see that reading is something men do also Converse about books Make time for reading Explain the meaning of new words

What to do if my child is stuck? 1. Refer back to phonics – What sound does the word begin with? Can you say the sounds in your head? Blend them together. 2. Read on – Read to the end of the sentence. What would make sense? 3. Does it sound right? 4. Use picture cues to help. REMEMBER PAUSE PROMPT & PRAISE

Talk about books - moving towards comprehension TRY:  Finding information on the page.  Being able to find information that is not on the page. Looking for clues  Thinking about situations and predicting what might happen.  Putting yourself in a character’s shoes and understanding what is going on from their viewpoint.  Book talk to make your child think  Ask open ended questions to encourage thinking and opinions Why Read?
