Class Review of Sold The novel, Sold, was set in a small village in Nepal. Lakshmi lived with her mother (Ama), her father, and her little baby brother. Times were hard. There was little food, rough weather, and a father with a selfish gambling problem always playing cards down at the tea shop.

Cont. The family earned money through selling cucumbers and other small trades. The father would gamble that away. When money was too tight, Lakshmi agreed to go into the city and work as a maid for a white family. Her father took her to be sold, and received money immediately for her services. Lakshmi was confused, but trusting.

Cont. Her new “Auntie” would bring her into the city to work for her. They meet a strange man who pays Auntie and who Lakshmi must pretend to be married to in order to cross the border. Once in the city, a dirty, gross city, Lakshmi is once again traded to a woman named Mumtaz who owned her own house with lots and lots of maids in it. Lakshmi soon finds out she is not a maid, but instead a sex slave to Mumtaz who now owes her 20,000 rupees before she can leave the brothel.

Why We Have Read This Novel… This is how young women every day are trapped into sex slavery. They are as young as ten years old, and are promised only a measly, embarrassing, and painful life. The cops are dirty, the men are abusive, and the owners of these young women completely relentless and unsympathetic. Sold is a novel that was written to bring awareness to these young, innocent women who are so undeserving of this immoral treatment. If discussed more openly, there is opportunity for growth of the operations fighting for the freedom of these girls and the rebuilding of thousands of young lives.
