Preventing Injury (CN) Accident Safety Conscious An unexpected event that results in damage or harm Being aware that safety is important and being careful to act in a safe manner.

Preventing Injury The accident chain: Chain of events… 1.The situation-Tony has overslept. He wakes up in a panic. The bus is coming in 15 minutes. 2.The unsafe habit-Tony didn’t put his books away from the night before. He just left them on the floor. 3.The unsafe action-Without looking where he is going, Tony runs to the bathroom to wash up

Preventing Injury The accident chain continued: 4. The accident-Tony trips over his books and falls down. 5. The result-When Tony falls, he sprains his wrist. He misses his bus and is in a lot of pain.

Preventing Injury Breaking the Accident Chain: -Change the situation: Tony could have gotten up earlier. He could have set his alarm for a reasonable time. He could have asked a family member to wake him if he overslept. -Change the unsafe habit: Tony could have put his books on a bookshelf or in his book bag. -Change the unsafe action: Tony could have paid attention to where he was going.

How Accidental Injuries Happen When people stop being safety conscious When people act or become careless When people do not think before they act When people are not aware of their environments or surroundings

Practicing Healthful Behaviors Stay away from risky behaviors Resist negative peer pressure Know your limits Wear proper protective gear when playing sports or other physical activities
