Moon and Earth By: Robert Brown

Moon landforms/craters Earth There are mountainous regions called highlands. There are small and large craters from meteorite strikes. Earth has mountains, plains, valleys and craters. Earth has many similar characteristics to the moon.

Moon Size Earth The radius of the moon is 1,737 km. The radius of the earth is 6,378 km.

Moon Gravity Earth It does have gravity, but only about 1/6 of the gravity on earth. The earth has mass and that’s why it has gravity. The force against an object.

Weather and atmosphere Moon The moon has no weather and no atmosphe re and thus the gravity is very weak compared to earth. Earth Weather takes place in the lowest level of atmosphere. Weather on earth can be extreme and change quickly.

Moon Water Earth Scientist think that water ice can survive in craters at the moon’s poles. Liquid water can’t survive. 326 million trillion gallons. About 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water. Only 2 percent is fresh.

Weathering and Erosion Moon There is no water or wind to erode the moon’s surface. Only meteor strikes cause erosion. Earth Weathering and erosion takes place as rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by the effects of weather.

Time to Rotate on its axis Moon It takes 27.3 days for the moon to rotate once on its axis. Earth Length of a day: 24 hours

Time to revolve/orbit once Moon Around the earth: 29 1/2 days Earth Around the sun (one year) 365 days

Effect on other cycles: Moon Tides: Due to gravity, the moon causes one cycle of high and low tides on earth daily. There are 12.5 hours between tides. Earth What causes Seasons?: Seasons are caused by the tilt of earth’s axis away or toward the sun as it travels through it’s year long path around the sun.
