I. How Do Ships Float? 1.Buoyancy- ability of a fluid or gas to exert an upward force on an object immersed in it.

2. Archimedes’ Principle A. Archimedes found that the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

3. Density A. Steel block sinks, but wood does not because the wood is less dense than the water. The steel block is more dense than the water.

II. Pascal’s Principle 1.Pressure- The force exerted per unit area A. Pressure Equation P=F/A

1.Applying the Principle A. Hydraulic machines move because of pressure a. The pressure to move the machines is created by is using hydraulic liquid. The liquid is squeezed through tubes creating pressure.

III. Bernoulli’s Principle 1. As velocity of the fluid increases, the pressure exerted by the fluid decreases.

IV. Fluid Flow 1. Viscosity- The resistance to flow by a fluid. Honey has a high viscosity. This means that it does not flow easily.
