Proper Use Of The Spiritual Gifts 1

I. The Gift That Edifies Vs. 1-5 V. 1 - “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.” 2

I. The Gift That Edifies Vs. 1-5 The great emphasis on the use of the gifts is edification – of the individual Christian and the whole church Edification = in the N.T. this refers to the promotion of spiritual growth 3

II. Gifts Must Result In Understanding – Vs [9] So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? 4

II. Gifts Must Result In Understanding – Vs To speak in a tongue is to speak in a sensible language If the hearers cannot understand the language then no teaching takes place – the hearers are not edified – there is no spiritual growth 5

III. With The Spirit & With The Understanding – Vs V What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 6

III. With The Spirit & With The Understanding – Vs A. Inspired prayers and songs B. Disposition or attitude of heart with which we pray & sing There must be understanding in prayer and in singing 7

IV. Proper Understanding Vs V Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 8

IV. Proper Understanding Vs Sign to unbelievers = the hearer knew the speaker did not know the language he was speaking and would realize he was speaking by the power of God 9

IV. Proper Understanding Vs Prophesying = was profitable to the believer Tongues would get the attention of the lost (v. 22) and prophesying would provide teaching & instruction (vs ) 10

V. Order In Worship Vs V Let all things be done unto edifying. 11

V. Order In Worship Vs V Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 12

V. Order In Worship Vs V And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. 13

V. Order In Worship Vs Do all things in an orderly manner (vs ) Women are not permitted to speak when the church comes together in one place 1 Tim. 2:

V. Order In Worship Vs When the church comes together with all present – including men: Women cannot lead prayer, teach/preach (v. 34) They are not to address the assembly 15

V. Order In Worship Vs Ask their husbands = problem may have involved the wives of inspired men In general, let them ask in private 16

VI. Decently And In Order Vs Vs Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order. 17

VI. Decently And In Order Vs The sum of this chapter – all we do in worship must be done decently and in order 18

Lessons 1. 1 Th. 5:11 – “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” 19

Lessons 2. Rom. 14:19 – “Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.” (NKJV) 20

Lessons 3. 1 Cor. 14:26 – “Let all things be done unto edifying” (KJV) “Let all things be done for edification.” (NKJV) 21
