BELLWORK  Create a list of three countries which currently have or have had dictatorships

UNIT 3: IDEOLOGIES & GOVERNMENT  Summative Projects  Task: Choose ONE of the following four assignments from the choice box below and using Internet, Books, Journals and other resources, complete the project as explained below.  Don’t forget to attach a Works Cited list with each project in MLA format.

Notes:  All students must choose which project they will complete Wednesday, April 7.  All students will receive in-class time to work on your projects on Thursday, April 8 – Remember to bring your resources to this class!  Rubrics for each project will be distributed April 8 depending on which project is chosen for completion and all projects will be graded by Monday, April 19.

DUE DATES  All students will be presenting or sharing their projects on Wednesday, April 14.

Dictarships and Their Successes  Impose totalitarian rule that ignores the wishes of the pepole  Can’t rely on support of their citizens, they must use force as means to secure popular compliance  Rationale: need for social order and economic control  Results: no better or worst

PROPOGANDA  What is Propoganda?

Propoganda  Dictatorships rely on propaganda to manipulate the masses  Do democracies use propaganda?

Propaganda  These “ideologies” are used to distract people from the absence of basic human rights How about using national anthem changes to distract people from our proroguing parliament? What other examples can we think of?

Rosie the Riveter  Women who took war jobs were praised.  The government’s propaganda also called on husbands to encourage their wives to take jobs  Although there was a lot of diversity among women workers, women of color were absent in advertisements.

Aristocracy vs. Oligarchy  Aristocracy – system in which power is held by a small group that rules under law for the common good  Oligarchy – power used by a wealthy minority to exploit an impoverished majority  All political systems are oligarchies – serving interests of the few

Nationalism in Developing Countries  Nationalism is a feeling of attachment and loyalty to a particular nation, society or territory and strong support for its interests  Developing Countries are the “Third World”
