C HAPTER 17… What occurs in each of the 3 phases of transcription?

C HAPTER 17 ( REMEMBER TRANSCRIPTION IS THE PRODUCTION OF M RNA STRAND FROM A DNA TEMPLATE ) Initiation- RNA polymerase II plus transcription factors combine and attach to the promoter on DNA. DNA double helix unwinds and RNA synthesis begins. Elongation- RNA strand “elongates” or grows as new nucleotides are added to the 3’ end. The DNA template reforms its double helix Termination-RNA polymerase detaches and the newly transcribed strand of RNA is released.
