BELLWORK  How can one person change a nation or a city-state?

CLASSICAL GREECE The Golden Age

PERICLES  Came to power after Persian Wars  Lead for 31 years  Time called Age of Pericles  Set three goals

PERICLES AND ATHENS  Strengthened democracy  Expanded the empire  Beautified Athens

PERICLES AND DEMOCRACY  Ability vs. Social Class – “Everyone is equal before the law”  Paid officials  18, male citizen – Athenian parents

DIRECT DEMOCRACY VS. REPUBLIC  Athens – direct democracy All citizens had a vote  United States – republic or representative democracy Elected representatives

THINK ABOUT IT  How did Pericles’ idea of “everyone is equal before the law” reduce the power of the wealthy?  Why would that make a difference?

DELIAN LEAGUE  Overseas trade = livelihood  City-states formed Delian League for mutual protection against Persia Persia - invaded Greece twice; constant threat  Headquarters and treasury located on island of Delos  Built strong navy

ATHENS AND DELIAN LEAGUE  Athens superior; took over league  Transferred money to Athens  Treated other city-states like conquered people  Athenian empire

THINK ABOUT IT  Predict what might happen if one city-state declares ultimate power over the others.

LEAGUE FORUM  You have been chosen by your city-state to represent the opinions of your people at the latest Delian League Forum. The topic for discussion is use of the League money to strengthen and beautify Athens.  Working with your team, prepare an argument to defend your city-state’s stand. Be sure to include support for your opinions.
