REDEMPTION

The plan of God through the ages Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace… (ESV) “A releasing effected by payment of a ransom”

The scarlet line of redemption:  The cause  The creation  The country  The cross  The church  The culmination  The catastrophe

Three Greek words that tell the story of redemption: 1.) AGORAZO - To buy or purchase in the marketplace  Emphasis on the place from which we have been redeemed.  We were all in the slave market of sin  John 8:34 Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.’  Revelation 5:9 “…and has redeemed us to God… (One of 31 references in the New Testament.)

Three Greek words that tell the story of redemption: 2.) LUTROO - To liberate by payment of a ransom  The emphasis is on the price paid for the redemption; the ransom price.  1Peter 1:18-19 “…Redeemed… with the precious blood of Christ…”

The blood of Christ:  Its atoning worth - Romans 3:23-24  Its judicial ability – Romans 5:9  Its reconciling effect – Colossians 1:20  Its substitutionary merit – 1Peter 3:18  Its cleansing power – 1John 1:7  Its covenantal basis – Matthew 26:28  Its redemptive value – Ephesians 1:7

Three Greek words that tell the story of redemption: 3.) EXAGORAZO - To buy out of the slave market, to buy off, to buy for one’s self  Emphasis on the purpose of redemption.  The “from – to” principle; Redemption always involves going from something to something else.

The “from – to” principle of redemption: 1.) Galatians 3:13-14 FROM - Redeemed from the curse of the law… TO - So that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. 2.) Galatians 4:5 FROM - To redeem those who were under the law, (To redeem those from under the law) TO - So that we might receive the adoption of sons.

The “from – to” principle of redemption: 3.) Titus 2:14 FROM - Redeem us from all lawlessness TO - To purify for Himself a people for His own possession, who are zealous of good works 4.) Hebrews 9:12-14 FROM - Securing eternal redemption… purify our conscience from dead works TO - To serve the living God.

To God be the glory To God be the glory, great things he hath done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, Who yielded his life an atonement for sin, And opened the life-gate that all may go in. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory, great things he hath done! O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, To every believer the promise of God; The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
