1 1 John Chapter 2: v 1-2

2 1 JOHN 2: v My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

5 salvation from the presence of sin saved into full conformity to Christ yet to be revealed in the last times from what ? – to what ? from presence of the sin nature to absence of the sin nature 1 Jn. 3:2 --- it has not appeared as yet what we shall be -- when He appears, we shall be like Him 1 Pet 1:5 --- protected -- for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last times Phil 1:6 --- will perfect it (a good work in you) until the day of Christ Jesus Future Tense What will occur here ?

6 salvation from the reigning power of sin we are to walk by faith (reckon ourselves dead to sin) from what ? – to what ? from the power of the sin nature to being alive to God Rom. 6:6 Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with ( put in idle !) Rom 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus the “Identification Truths” describe the Present Tense of salvation What is occurring here ? Present Tense

7 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. little children is teknion τεκν ί ον – “It is a term of affection by a teacher to his disciples under circumstances requiring a tender appeal.” (Vine) related to “tikto” - to give birth to translated “little born one” (Wuest) used in 1JN 2:1,12, 28; 1JN 3:7,18; 1JN 4:4, 1JN5:21 also in John 13:33 and Gal 4:19

I am writing these things to you John uses this phrase 10 times in 1 John In Chp. 1 it was “we write” In Chp. 2 it is: “I am writing” to little children, to you Fathers also “I am not writing” or “I have written” See 1 John 2:7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 21, 26 and 1 John 5:13

9 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. so that you may not sin so that – introduces a purpose clause you may not sin or you may not commit an act of sin (Wuest) this is God’s intent in our Christian life see Rom 6:12, 1 Tim 5:20. Eph 4:26

10 1b and if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and if anyone sins This is something we are to remember 1 John 1:8 -10 is something we might say or speak about our sin nature or sins we have an Advocate Advocate – paraklētos - lit., "called to one's side". It is properly a verbal adj. referring to an aid of any kind. In the Greek writers, used of a legal advisor, pleader, proxy, or advocate, one who comes forward in behalf of and as the representative of another (Zodhiates) see John 14:16,26 ; John 15:26 and John 16:7

11 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; He Himself is the propitiation propitiation – hilasmos (noun) - akin to hileōs ("merciful, propitious"), signifies an expiation, a means whereby sin is covered and remitted. It is used in the NT of Christ Himself as "the propitiation " (Vine) see 1 John 4:10 also see the verb form of propitiation Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. other verses John 1:29 and Eph 5:2

12 2b and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. for our sins believers’ sins are paid for by Christ’s propitiation believers’ sins are also forgiven see Eph 1:7 and Col 1:13-14 and not for ours only – Christ’s work applies to all for those of the whole world unbelievers’ sins are paid for by Christ’s propitiation unbelievers’ sins are not forgiven until they accept Christ as their Savior – see John 3:18 and 1 John 5:10
