Oskar’s View of Death Oskar is trying to make some sort of sense out of death.  A precocious and intelligent kid, but a kid nonetheless, his father's death leaves him devastated and empty, giving his emotions that he can't yet understand.  Oskar is completely occupied with morbid ideas and images of death, which leave him in a constant state of anxiety and fear.

Cannot comprehend Death? Oskar’s search for the Blacks is also his search to accept the death of his father. “The more I found, the less I understood.” (1.28) - Oskar Schell -Although Oskar was talking about his search, it can also be interpreted as his understanding of death.

Grandfather’s Lack of Resolve “There are worse things,” she said, "worse than being like us. Look, at least we’re alive”, I could see that she wanted those last words back... We are always alone in this world. Those around us can help us, support us, and guide us, but one day they will be gone. You cannot lose yourself like Thomas; or you have to move on and remember all the happy moments, like Oskar. Transitioning from loss is more important than suffering!
