Land Planning Quiz Prep

What is hazardous waste?

Any waste product that can harm people or the environment is hazardous waste

How do we dispose of hazardous waste?

What is “urban sprawl?”

The tendency for people to move out of the cities and develop farmland at a lower population density than the cities

What is the energy advantage of cities?

Lower heat usage Lower transportation distances Lower amount of road building Less far to pump water and waste Lower energy use by fire and police

What does your cell phone have to do with civil war in Africa?

Tantalum mining is being used by the rebels and the government to fight a war that is killing thousands of civilians

Should global companies have a responsibility to countrys that are injured by the company’s profit making?

Explain how good planning helps the environment.

Define the words listed on the next 9 slides

Urban

Suburban

Rural

Range land

Forest land

Crop land

Land Preserves

Ecosystem services

Wetlands

What are 6 things that Ecosystem Services does?

Purify air & water Preserve & renew soil fertility Flood control Drought control Climate control Maintain biodiversity

What are 3 reasons for urbanization?

Jobs Education Culture

Problem – The Urban Crisis

What category of problems is caused by growth that is too fast?

Growth too fast leads to INFRASTRUCTURE problems

What are 7 INFRASTRUCTURE problems?

Traffic jams – Not enough roads Substandard housing School overcrowding Police, fire & medical shortages Water shortages (Water & piping) Water pollution because of inadequate sewer capacity Substandard housing

What does urban sprawl have to do with food production?

In the US, 2.5 million acres of farmland is taken out of production each year!

What watershed problems come from Urban Sprawl?

Water runs off instead of going into ground – streams flood Pollution from pesticides, waste & weed killers

What 7 energy problems come from Urban Sprawl?

People need cars to get to work – we can’t provide public transportation Longer roads for fewer people Houses less energy efficient than in city

Fire, police, ambulances stretched thin Septic problems because sewer lines too long Houses built on marginal land that is not stable Heat islands cause more storms

What is the main advantage of urban planning?

Provides infrastructure before it is needed Examples: White Marsh, Hunt Valley building envelopes in Balto Co Rt 24, Rt 40, Rt 543, Bel Air, Aberdeen, HdG Building envelopes in Harford County

What are 2 things good urban planning brings to transportation?

Mass Transit needed to urban centers/jobs Good roads and controls to avoid traffic jams

What’s it’s problem?

Farm Land 250 million acres in US Much is threatened by development

What’s it’s problem?

Range Land Problems Can become degraded by over grazing Invasive plants a problem Need to increase production to feed increasing population.

What are things that must be done to maintain our rangeland?

Range Land Maintenance Allow to rest Limit herd size Kill invasive species Replant with native plants

What’s it’s products??

Forest Lands Wood Paper Maple syrup Turpentine Oxygen Lower carbon dioxide Slow erosion

How much forest does each American consume each year?

Each person in the US consumes about a 90 foot tall tree each year.

What does it mean to clear cut timber?

Clear Cut

What is selective cutting?

Selective Cutting

What is deforestation?

Deforestation Clearing of trees from an area without plans of replacing them. Generally done for farming or building

What is reforestation, and why does it happen?

Reforestation Planting or allowing the forest to grow back Generally in lands that prove to be poor for farming

What is the water cycle?

Water evaporates into the atmosphere, rises and cools. The water condenses out of the cool air as rain. The rain falls to Earth and evaporates

How much of the world’s water is fresh water?

3 Percent

Rivers, streams, lakes, ponds – any fresh water that is above ground - - Duh!

What is a river system?

The river and all of the WATER that drains into it, such as streams, creeks, etc. The land is NOT part of the river system

What is a watershed?

All of the land that eventually drains into a particular river or it’s tributaries.

What is groundwater?

Water under the ground in aquifers

What is the water table?

The top level of the water in an aquifer

What is an aquifer?

A layer of permeable rock, gravel or sand that contains groundwater

. What is an aquifer’s recharge zone?

Permeable areas of the ground where surface water and rain can enter the aquifer to refill it

Why are wells dug much deeper than the top of the water table?

So that if the water level drops, the well won’t run dry

The Ogallala Aquifer’s water mostly came from melting glaciers 10,000 years ago. How is it recharged today?

From rain and surface water

Is enough water being deposited in the aquifer today to keep it from going dry?

Nope, we are pumping out more of the 10,000 yr old water than is going back in, because that area is pretty dry

The END
