GCSE short course Religious Education Unit 8 Religion and Society Meet Wednesdays after school – 4.45 pm HF5

Student names:

Specification Four sections; covering rights and responsibilities, environmental and medical issues, peace and conflict, crime and punishment. Based on a study of Christianity and one other world religion. We will be studying Islam. Will be examined through a 1 ½ hour exam. The exam is in four sections, students to pick 1 out of 2 questions in each section.

Rights and responsibilities Based on Christianity alone. Cover: Using the Bible and Church as authority for making moral decisions. Role of conscience Situation ethics Human rights in the UK and how they are important for Christians. Christian teachings on moral duties and responsibilities. Genetic engineering and cloning

Environmental and medical issues Covers: Global warming – causes and solutions Forms of pollution Scarcity of natural resources Christian teachings on stewardship Teaching of Islam on stewardship Medical treatments for infertility – attitudes towards them in Christianity and Islam. Transplant surgery and attitudes towards it.

Peace and Conflict United Nations and how they work for peace How religious organisations promote world peace Why wars occur Theory of just war Differences of opinion amongst Christians and Muslims with regards to war Christian and Muslim opinions on bullying Religious conflicts within families Christian and Islamic teachings on reconciliation and forgiveness

Crime and punishment The need for law and justice Theories of punishment and arguments for and against them. Why justice is important to Christians and Muslims The nature of capital punishment including non religious and religious arguments. Laws on drugs and alcohol/ social and health problems caused by them. Attitudes towards them in Islam and Christianity.
