Towards the Work-package with LHCb for the LHCb upgrade DT-LHCb coordination meeting 13 January 2015

MARS exercise 2014/2015 Has been useful to specify involvement in the LHCb upgrade. Objectives for 2015 help to clarify further our contribution in the medium term. Most interviews are done

VELO project (Raphael) Technical support and advice to the VELO and VELO upgrade projects – construction of new vacuum tank to allow source and laser evaluation of VELO upgrade hybrid assemblies – remote controlled movement of hybrid testing systems – support for test-beam, including installation of irradiated assemblies – technical advice and support for planning the 2018 VELO Upgrade installation Technical support and advice to the ongoing cooling activities, in particular micro-channel cooling – refurbishment of CO2 cooling systems to re-launch micro-channel cooling studies at CERN in support of the Oxford group – technical advice and support to the VELO group in the development of the evaporator and safety system for cooling of the upgraded VELO Technical support to other LHCb projects, such as HERSCHEL

SciFi Project (Christian, Robert, Thomas) Work package coordination of the 'Fibre procurement and QA': – consolidation of fibre quality and procurement of approx. 10'000 km of fibres – prepare labs and set-ups for high volume fibre QA in 2015 and train technical personnel Project management: EDRs and PRRs towards series production in 2015/16

RICH and TORCH (Thierry, Didier) Coordination of TORCH activities at CERN. – MCP ageing tests using a prototype tube and laboratory investigations – Tests of the new front-end electronics and commissioning of the complete readout chain – Laboratory and beam tests of new TORCH small- scale prototype Photon detector R&D for the LHCb-RICH upgrade.

UT and LHCb integration (JLB, OJ, RD, BS) Work-package coordination for UT integration Design and integration of the UT detector: – Conceptual design of the UT detector box, taking into account the geometrical constraints – Mechanical and thermal calculations to validate the design of the UT box – Prototype construction and thermal measurements to validate the design – Design a polymer piece serving as interface between the beam-pipe and the UT box according to the thermal and mechanical specifications

CO 2 cooling coordination The coordination effort for the C0 2 cooling needs of the LHCb upgrade started in May 2014, having as goal the: “Development and construction of a CO2 plant for the VELO and UT detectors for the LHCb upgrade, in collaboration between PH-DT and the LHCb detector groups.” The goal for 2014 has been the documentation of the cooling specifications of the VELO and UT sub-detectors.  The UT specification are close to be ready  VELO specification are a bit behind (safety aspects need to be addresses) The design of a cooling system starts with the evaporator system – We are facing special challenges for the VELO detector (micro-channel cooling) – The situation for UT is simpler (and the people in charge have been identified).  An action plan addressing the challenges on the VELO side has been prepared
