Where Do Fairy-Tales Come From?  Tales have existed for thousands of years  No one can pin point exactly when most tales started (there are a few exceptions)  Originally told orally  Only literary versions survive  Most are a “version” of what was told the generation before and are much different than the original story  Usually involve magic of some kind  Some are commonly known and have been sensationalized by Walt Disney, many are not as popular; you can find at least one from every culture WHAT ARE SOME FAIRY-TALES YOU KNOW?

Charles Perrault Little Red Riding Hood  Born January 1628 ; Died May 1703  French Author  Helped revolutionize Fairy-Tales; most derived from pre-existing tales  Used scenery from around him and incorporated into his stories  Known for  Little Red Riding Hood; Bluebeard; Puss in Boots; Mother Goose collection WHAT OTHER AUTHORS USE THE SCENERY AROUND THEM IN THEIR STORIES? CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE STORY OF LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD OR BLUEBEARD?

The Brother’s Grimm Their Many Tales  Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm  Grimm’s Law  European Tales  Technique of “Contamination”  Look at all the variants of the stories, strip them away and discover the true/core story.  Wished to create a literary version of folktales  Known for:  Cinderella; Snow White (“Snow Cap”)  Rumpelstiltskin; Rapunzel; Hansel and Gretel WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THAT THE VERSIONS OF GRIMM’S TALES ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE “POPULAR” STORIES WE KNOW?

Hans Christian Andersen The Little Mermaid  April August 1875  Danish  Wrote some of his stories originally  Lifelong Writer  Knew Charles Dickens  Affiliated with Royalty  Known For:  The Little Mermaid  Thumbelina  The Princess and the Pea DOES ANYONE KNOW A STORY OF ANDERSEN’S NOT MENTIONED? IF NOT, WHAT IS THUMBELINA AND THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA ABOUT?

Common Elements

“Once upon a time…”  Fairy tales usually start with “once upon a time” and are mostly in a faraway land and a long time ago.  They usually, but not always, end with “happily ever after.”

Royalty  Fairy tales always have someone of royal or noble blood.  These can include Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses.  They will often include very poor people or peasants.

Animals  Animals in fairy tales often have magical abilities and have a pivotal role in the story.

Enchanted Forest  Setting is usually an enchanted forest, a castle or a kingdom.

Magic  One character is usually gifted with magical powers. They can be either good or evil.

Good vs. Evil  Innocent, good characters are subjected to misfortune and evil misdoings.  Evil and powerful antagonists fight against good.

Number Patterns  Look for patterns using 3, 5, 6, 7and 12.

Lesson or Moral  Sometimes a fairy tale can teach a lesson.  They can touch on universal themes such gender roles, family issues, coming of age, good over evil.

Common Elements  “Once Upon a Time…”  Royalty/Poverty  Animals  Enchanted Forest  Magic/Magical Person  Good vs. Evil  Number Patterns  “Happily Ever After”  Lesson or Moral

The Little Mermaid Discussion Today we will be reading together part of Hans Christian Andersen’s novel. What we do not finish will be homework. After reading several pages we will pause to discuss for a bit, then read silently. Questions to ponder… 1. Why do you think Disney left out the part of the story in which one of Ariel’s sisters is allowed to go to the surface when she is 15? 2. The climax in the text and in the film are drastically different. What is the significance? 3. Are The Little Mermaid and Ariel the same character?

Group Project Assignment This assignment is to demonstrate the concepts and ideas you have learned during the Fairy-Tale Unit and how they apply to literature and other tales You will be broken into 5 groups: Beauty and the Beast Snow White Sleeping Beauty Little Red Riding Hood 2. As a group, you will research and find as many versions of the tales as possible. Remember, most of you will have at least two (the original tale and Disney’s version) but for all the above there are many more. You will then use The Brother’s Grimm concept of “contamination” and strip all the details of each the stories to find the “core” story. 3. A PowerPoint of this is due on Friday February, 24 th. Be prepared to present your findings. The PP should include: a summary of the most original tale, several other tales and their authors, what is different about each of the tales and what the “core” story truly is. Pictures, video clips (we all love Disney) are welcome. Sources MUST be cited.
