Showing our feelings Pre-reading Discuss these questions : 1.What is the function of body language? The main function of the body language is to show all kinds of ideas, feelings, wishes or attitudes. 2. How do you find body language in our daily life? It is sometimes more important than spoken language, or at least as important as spoken language.

3. How can the same body language express different feelings or ideas in different cultures? The same body language can express different feelings or ideas in different cultures. For example, nodding the head means “yes” in many countries but in some Asian countries it means “no”. A smile is usually intended to put people at ease, but it does not always mean that you are happy. A smile can

4. How can different body language express the same feeling or idea in different cultures? hide other feelings, such as anger, fear or worry. If someone “loses face” they may smile to hide it too. That is definitely not a happy smile. And there are also “forced smiles”. There are many cases to show that different body language can express the same feeling or idea, for example, a smile, a handshake, a bow, can be used to show welcome.

P30 exercise 2 1. How can we know others’ feelings, even if they do not speak to us? We can watch the expression on people’s faces; we can look at whether they face us or look away; we can observe how they hold their arms and hands; we can see whether they are close to or far away from others. Are

they smiling, frowning, shrugging, holding their arms in front of them or touching other people? 2. Why should we be careful of our own body language? Because we must be sure not to be impolite in other cultures, and we need to communicate without being misunderstood.

3. Why is it important to watch others as well as listen to them? We need to watch other people because they may be communicating one idea in words and a different one in body language.
