Maths at the movies

OUR AIMS FOR THIS EVENING O To outline some of the changes in the maths curriculum O To share some of the activities that we do in school O To provide ideas on how you can support your child at home

New content or emphasis Strong focus on fluency, depth and mastery Yearly objectives Larger numbers introduced earlier Tables to 12x12 by end of Y4 Earlier introduction of formal written methods Earlier introduction of standard units of measurement Focus on fractions Roman numerals

What are the main changes? * increase in the amount of subject matter being taught * Increase in levels expected of children at each age range * Fractions are introduced earlier * multiplication tables up to 12x are expected by age 9 * increased emphasis on practice. “So pupils develop the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately” * particular emphasis on multi-step problems and more emphasis on money and time * Calculators are out! - to be replaced by “mental fluency and the use of efficient written methods in the four mathematical operations” * Using and applying strand is now removed with expectation that this is core in all areas of maths

How would you explain your mathematical thinking

47 – 28

* The Development of Maths Capability and Confidence – research by Oxford and Bristol Universities.

* Lots of opportunities for talk-peer talk, whisper maths/snowballing. * Asking Why? How do you know? Convince me. Numeracy Police. * Problem solving, open-ended investigations. Real-life context when possible. * Use of resources through key organisations: * NRICH * NCETM * Embrace the tangent! * Lots of different representations and encourage use of practical materials. * Pre-empting connections. * Teacher modelling and stream of consciousness.

* Drawn next to where children have become stuck during and investigation. It helps children to pinpoint exactly where they are struggling.

* Great for working wall or corridor display. * Easy to prepare - works particularly well with sections of hundred squares or multiplication squares.

Multiples of even numbers are even numbers. Could extend by labelling areas of the classroom or playground ‘always’, ‘sometimes’, ‘never’ and inviting children to move to where they think is correct. They must then convince the undecided children in the middle to move to their area.

My answer is 64… What’s my question?

Amount of water in the bath Time

How many guesses will it take to get the number giving only ‘yes’ ‘no’ answers?

Children ask questions and teacher responds ‘higher’ or ‘lower’. How many guesses will it take? ??.7??

45 x 2 = x 2 =9 90 ÷ 2 = 45 £ 2 x 45 = £ x 4 = 90
