Jack the Ripper ● Background: Also known as the Whitechapel Murderer and the Leather Apron, these killing cases happened in the East end of London during 1888 to During this time, the East End of London was suffering from overpopulation of immigrants and poor people, resulting in crime and prostitution. ● Fact: His was named Jack the Ripper because of a famous letter that was written by "Jack the Ripper" called the Dear Boss letter to the police. Most people believe that this was done by the journalists to sell more newspapers.

Who and Why? ● A reason as to why this case is so famous is because of its media coverage and its symbol as a murder. ● The newspapers covered this case non-stop while the Victorian Era people of London viewed this case as a symbol of evil.

Who were murdered? ● The Jack the Ripper murders had 5 victims. These murders were filed with the Whitechapel murders of 6, which happened around the same time and place. The five murders were called cononical because of their connections but the later Whitechapel murders were also listed as part of Jack's murders, although there are fewer connections between them.

Canonical Five ● The main 5 killings of Jack the Ripper were Mary Nichols (31 st August 1888), Annie Chapman (8 th September 1888), Elizabeth Stride (30 th September 1888), Catherine Eddowes (30 th September 1888), and Mary Kelly (9 th November 1888). ● They were all prostitutes.

Style of killing ● All of the killings were very brutal. Some of the victims had their heads almost decapitated and brutally beaten, some had their organs removed, and some had their skins removed. ● One thing that was commonly seen was the removal of organs and the gender of the victim. They were usually women and most of them were in prostitution.

My observation ● I believe that Jack the Ripper is British because there was a swell of immigrants from a country that were dispised in Britain. Irish people were a big part of the immigrants. I also believe that Jack was a fairly wealthy man with a particular focus on women, as most of his murder victims were women. ● I believe that Jack also had a thirst for blood and gore. His victims had all been mutilated and some beyond recognition.

Professional Observation ● Jack was viewed to have medical training because of his taking out the organs. He was also viewed to have uncontrollably lusted after women and blood because of his violent mutilations. ● He had often posed the dead bodies in a sexual way (legs open) to give shock to the civilians and policemen.
