Torch-Fired Enameling

VOCABULARY ENAMEL: opaque powdered glass heated to create a glass coating on surface of metal. VENTILATION: Eliminates excess fumes when using torch. Must switch ON before using torch. QUENCH: To cool hot metal run under water. *Use tweezers…not fingers! FIRESCALE: Oxidation on surface of metal after direct heat from torch.

NECESSARY TOOLS & SUPPLIES Copper shape (simple shapes work best- remember NO LIST) Magazine paper Tweezers Holding Agent (binds enamel to metal) Bottle cap Enamel Sifter Protective Eyewear

STEPS TO ENAMELING 1.Saw & drill jump ring. 2.File & sand surface. 3.Clean metal with ammonia mixture. Do not touch surface once clean! 3. Transport to bottle cap. 4. Paint on holding agent. 5. Sift an even layer of enamel onto metal. Not too thick!

6. Carefully transport metal to torch area. 7. Turn on ventilation and put on tinted glasses. 8. Light torch and heat from underneath in a slow circular motion. 9. Let cool for 1 minute, then quench & pickle for 2-4 minutes. 10. Sand away firescale to complete process! * WE WILL NOT BUFF ENAMELED METAL*
